Implementing Positive Psychology

Whilst traditional psychology tends to focus on the causes and symptoms of mental illness, positive psychology is centred on enhancing wellbeing and happiness to allow people and organisations to flourish.

All too often we can become fixated on the negatives, our weaknesses, the burnout or job insecurities, and in doing so we shift our attention away from the areas which actually allow us to thrive and succeed.

Building positive emotions in the workplace and applying the scientific tools and knowledge to harness and develop employees strengths will lead to greater work fulfilment, motivation and resilience to cope with uncertainty and stress.

If you look behind the scenes of any successful company you will find an exceptional team leader with a Growth Mindset.

What is a Growth Mindset?

An individual who approaches their role with a growth mindset is positive and forward thinking. They truly believe they can learn anything, and that their success comes from hard work and practice. They do not dwell on the variables beyond their control, and they see failures as opportunities to learn and grow from. They are open-minded, adapt well to change, and embrace challenges with positivity and persistence.

In contrast, a fixed mindset is filled with limitations, self-doubt and fear of failure. An individual with a fixed mindset believes that their abilities and intelligence are pre-determined. Because of this, they tend to give up easily and avoid challenges. They are defensive to feedback and they seek out opportunities to affirm the things they are good at which results in staying firmly within their comfort zone, restricting career progression and success.

Research suggests individuals with a fixed mindset are 58% more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem compared with those with a growth mindset. Adopting a growth mindset has been shown to have huge benefits to an individuals mental health and wellbeing, reducing levels of stress, anxiety and depression and increasing self-esteem.

When a company embraces a growth mindset their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed; they behave ethically, are equipped to deal with setbacks, and actually seek out opportunities for growth and innovation.
